REFLECTIONS OF TOMORROW'S PAST (FOG OF WAR), 2022
The work before us is in direct reference to Claude Monet's Water Lilies (1914-26) approximating its dimensions as well as the triptych's angled presentation at the Museum of Modern Art, New York. Monet envisioned a circular installation of his lily paintings that would enfold the viewer in an expanse of water, flora, and sky. Aranda has superimposed various compositional elements from Monet's original onto his camouflage support: select lily pads, vegetation, and reflections are all called out as textural elements. Gone, however, is the luminous color of Monet's paintings. Instead, Aranda presents a dense and battlefield-like view, an antithesis to the beauty Monet envisioned and a reminder of what conflict may take away. Camouflage, after all, is designed to conceal and disguise.

*Aranda began working with Pendleton wool as a material for his art as early as 2015 — he was intrigued by the stages of production that require the movement of raw materials to mills in Oregon and Washington before the finished products are moved to worldwide retail locations. Trimmings, selvages, and headers, as well as unsold remainders, are returned to the Pendleton outlet.

For the artist, this became a metaphor for migration and deportation. It is worth noting that many workers at the Pendleton production locations are of Mexican descent. Aranda has also embraced the cultural associations Pendleton blankets present through their various patterned designs to Indigenous peoples, settlers, the National Parks, and now, a camo-pattern marketed to hunters and outdoor types.
