John Buck
Drawings On Wood
October 29 - December 23, 2026
Receptions: “First Thursday,” November 5 and December 3, 6-8pm
The artist will be in attendance for the opening reception on November 5th.
Greg Kucera Gallery is pleased to present our eighth one-person exhibition for John Buck. This show includes thirteen ink drawings on wood. The artist has long incorporated jelutong, a light, soft, Southeast Asian wood introduced to the artist in the early 1980s, to create his sculptures and woodblock prints. Jelutong has the benefit of being a fast growing, easily renewable wood. Its greatest advantage to Buck is that it doesn't darken much over time and keeps its light warm color. Here he uses planks of jelutong to form panels onto which he makes ink drawings that conjure images of natural rock and water formations, and life in the mountains and desert of the western United States.
KILAUEA CALDERA, 2024
“These new drawings are inspired by engravings from the turn of the century found in old books from my collection about the West. Drawn to the quality of line as well as subject matter, the images echo forward to modern day issues. Sketching these ideas out on wood is both spontaneous and natural — an extension of my graphic sensibility and reflection of my life making woodblock prints and wood sculpture. I love the feel of ballpoint pen on the soft wood and the transformation of scraps into final drawn objects.” — John Buck
