Greg Kucera Gallery is pleased to present our twelfth one-person exhibition of sculpture by Seattle artist Edward Wicklander. Wicklander is a craftsman of diverse talents. His work involves many different materials and techniques: wood carving, welding and steel fabrication, metal casting, silver soldering, electroforming, mold making, and more.
Wicklander embraces a diverse mix of folk tradition and spontaneous innovation resulting in subject matter that is as varied as his materials. NIGHTMARE is a dreamlike reinterpretation of the painting, THE NIGHTMARE, by the 18th century Swiss artist, Henry Fuseli. STRETCH is a portrait of one of the artist’s cats drawn from direct personal observation. IRON DRAWERS is a humorously miniature pair of cast iron briefs hanging from a clothes hanger. There are clever surprises to be found in all of Wicklander’s work if you look closely enough.
“My work is fueled by a personal vision that often reflects my own peculiar observations of contemporary society and environment. The combination of diverse materials and a sometimes startling juxtaposition of objects are important considerations in the development of my sculpture as an identifiable body of work.” –Ed Wicklander
