Michael Dailey, ever the subtle composer of color and texture, managed to evoke time and space so evocatively. One can pick out the representation of field, road, billowing cloud, the time of sunset, and the purple sea at that moment of perfection.

One of a pair of waterfall paintings by Graves, this is the darker, moodier of the two while the other employs a more playful, even electric palette. These were likely painted at The Rock on Fidalgo Island in the middle of WW II, just after Graves' painful experience of filing as a conscientious objector to the war. His application failed and he was jailed briefly.

The previous year, 1942 was the beginning of his spectacular success with his first of 18 shows with Marian Willard Gallery, from whence these paintings come. Also in 1942 Graves exhibited in his first Whitney Annual and in every consecutive Annual from 1942 - 1967.

During the Iran Hostage Crisis of 1987, Roger was jogging on a county road approximately a mile from his house when a pickup truck carrying two men approached.
When the truck got within 50 feet, it suddenly veered toward him, causing Roger to jump into a gully beside the road.
As Roger leapt from the road the driver leaned out the window and flipped Roger his middle finger, yelling as he sped off, "That's for your ayatollah, you Chinaman!"

BIRDS IN THE CATACOMB, 1972
Carved granite with wood base
7.25 x 20 x 7 inches
$16,000

This small work is a sweet image of three hatchlings just liberated from their eggs.

The suggestion of catacombs is one of Washington's many references to religious subject matter. Like all of his work, it's carved bas-relief into very hard stone, in this case granite. The title is carved into the original wood base.

As is typical of Washington's work, this bas-relief is carved into extremely hard and unforgiving stone. The combination of nature and religion expressed in the title is evocative and satisfying.
