About the exhibition
Our first exhibition of works from the Estate of Michael Dailey
will survey almost fifty years of his paintings, spread throughout our first floor galleries.
Dailey's oil paintings from the 1960s through the 1970s reveal
his shift from a complex, gesturally rendered landscape toward a
sublime suggestion of atmosphere in which the land or sea reference is finally reduced to the very bottom edge of the canvas.
The sky, or the depiction of air and light, filling the greater
expanse of canvas became the ineffable subject matter of these
paintings marking Dailey's maturation as an artist.
As he transitioned from oil to acrylic paint, his format changed
from wide, more or less horizontal, bands of open space to
the inclusion of vertical and diagonal elements suggesting the
passage of time from one band of color to another moving
across the picture plane.
Our exhibition will include paintings on paper from the 1970s
that parallel, within their small format of oil paint washes, the
shifts that occurred in his larger canvases. The later works on
paper reveal a rich variety of media (graphite, pastel, watercolor and acrylic paint) all in service to Dailey's description of the seasons, time, and weather of places both seductively familiar and strangely alluring. Read more about Michael Dailey here.
